Thanks to all of you who sent comments on the first draft of the METAFONT
manual. It is now much improved, unless my editing has introduced a lot of
additional mistakes.

I was surprised at how many of you took the title "a system for character shaping"
seriously. Maybe I should have said "a system for building upstanding characters".

Here is a list of the page numbers for which reward money will be gratefully paid:

METAFONT will be changing in several respects this weekend, and you'll have to
change your programs if you want them to still work. (Sorry, but this was my
last chance to make big improvements.) Here are the big improvements:

1. There is now complete duality between pens and erasers. For example,
"cpen#" specifies a circular eraser. Instead of "lers" and "rers" you
should write "lpen#" and "rpen#".

2. Variable w0 is no longer ad hoc and peculiar. The height of hpens (and
lpens and rpens) is now indicated by the integer parameter "hpenht", and
the width of vpens by the integer parameter "vpenwd". Note that these need
no longer be equal. To make your old programs work again, whenever you
define w0 just define hpenht and vpenwd to be the same thing.

There also are a couple of minor improvements to the interaction (a few
error messages have become more appropriate, and when you hit "x" in
response to an error message, the system will ask you to type "x" again
to confirm your intention to quit).
